FFA is a national organization that originated in 1928. FFA is an American youth organization that promotes and supports agricultural education in middle and high school classes. Chapter President of Star City, Arkansas, Makayla Holbert-Chapman has been apart of the FFA club for four years. She became interested in being the FFA president when she started her first year of agriculture class as a freshman. “When I found out what FFA was and what all it consisted of, I knew that I would really enjoy being apart of the club. I have always loved animals and I was excited to gain more knowledge about them,” said Makayla.

Being an FFA officer is not an easy position to hold. Being the president comes with many responsibilities. The most important responsibility for the FFA president is presiding over meetings. “I am accounted for the entire chapter at every conference, meeting, and ceremony. It is my duty to make sure we are presentable and make a good impression to the other chapters,” she stated. The FFA president is also responsible for making sure that everyone in FFA and on the officer team is on task, plan certain events, communicate with the community, and make important decisions. “Not only do I plan most of the events and make sure everything is going as planned, I am the one who has to make all the important decisions for the entire team and it is not always the easiest thing to do,” she continued.

“Of course I have goals for myself as the chapter president. I have hundreds of them, but there are 3 that are the most important to me to reach before I plan to reach any other ones,” said Makayla. Three goals she has as an FFA president is to be responsible, organized, and make sure all of her duties as well as her team’s are accomplished. Every FFA member views a great future for their school’s chapter, but the officers are the ones who plan for the future. “I want nothing more but for my FFA chapter to be more involved in the community and the chapter. I believe that if all FFA members get more involved, we will leave our mark on our school’s FFA club and FFA as a whole. I also want the FFA club members, officers, and agriculture students to be more educated in the agricultural field,” she said.

Not only is Makayla in involved in FFA, she is also involved in Art Club, Spanish Club, Math Club, and the Star City High School Soccer Team. As a high school student, I know how hard it is to juggle all your classes and be in extracurricular activities. “I try my best to balance time for all my activities. The two that take up most of my time are soccer and FFA. Most of the time, I can balance out the two. I normally have FFA meetings in the morning before school and soccer practice in the afternoon,” she stated.

Throughout chapter president, Makayla Holbert-Chapman’s years in FFA, she has participated in several activities. She has been apart of the show team and showed cows for three years. She has also participated in a lot of community service, competed in horse judging competitions and the Open and Closing Ceremony, and been to a few leadership camps and conferences. Makayla has also been awarded countless awards such as the Beef Proficiency Award, Horse Judging Award, Show Team Awards, Greenhand Award, and the Chapter and State Award. Not all FFA members and officers benefit from the experience, but Makayla definitely has. “I have learned to be a more responsible leader and person by being apart of the FFA officer team. I have also learned to manage my time, work as a team, and compromise in different types of situations,” said Star City High School FFA President.
