Tayelor Johnson, a Star City High School freshman opened up to me about her experience being a freshman. Despite the numerous television shows and movies that depicts being a high school freshman as being a horrible experience and constantly being picked on by upperclassmen, she says that those are so wrong in her experience.

The first question that I asked Tayelor Johnson was did she feel prepared for high school. Although she was hesitant, she replied with a simple, “um...I guess so.” She said that it really wasn’t much to prepare for coming to Star City High School because it isn't one of the larger schools. She also credited being so prepared for high school to being able to visit over here so many times from 8th grade and to visitation days before school officially started last August. She says that it makes it easier finding her classes know the different halls, since its only 4.

I then went on to ask Tayelor what was her favorite class. She said that biomed was her favorite class although it’s a very challenging course, she feels as though it’s “preparing her for college.” Although, this interview was not about me, I had to agree with her. Even though the class is a struggle, she says that she will definitely enroll into it next year and learn about the different human body systems.

The next question that I asked the freshman was something that she expected coming from the middle school to the high school. She responded with, “I really thought it would be more school spirit. I guess since everyone is older they don’t really care anymore.” I let her know that definitely was not the case and that everyone else wanted more school spirit as well. Even the teachers.

My next question was something that she looked forward to in upcoming years. Tayelor said, “I really look forward to having more variability in creating my own schedule because I didn’t have of a choice in much this year.” She said that there were some virtual classes that she looks forward to taking as she progresses through high school.

When I asked Tayelor what would she improve at Star City High School if she could, she said that she would improve the lunches, school spirit, and the dress code. She said that she mostly has to either stop by the store in the mornings before school or wait until she gets home to eat because the food isn’t good at all. Tayelor also said that the school spirit is basically nonexistent, and the dress code might as well throw us into uniforms. I couldn’t help but agree with her because she was brutally honest about it.

Another thing I asked Tayelor was if there was something she wish she knew before coming to high school. She said that she wish she would have known that it wasn’t as scary and nerve wracking as everyone said it was. She said she could have saved some of the summer nights she spent worrying about the start of school and actually slept.

All in all, she says that high school is a great experience so far!
